Echoing Governor "Jerry" Brown's inaugural address pledge to spur further installations of solar panel systems in California, Janice Brewer, the newly-elected governor of Arizona, said she hoped to create a solar industry in the state that is "the envy of the world" in her inaugural address this week.
Governor Brewer, who formerly served as Arizona's secretary of the state, affirmed that the state has crossed major hurdles in the past few years as it moved to incorporate more renewable energy sources into its electrical grid. "We've been named the country's solar king, offering the highest solar power potential in the nation, while attracting new companies - and at the same time rededicating ourselves to business retention," she told a crowd.
Currently, the state is home to First Solar Inc., the world's largest thin-film solar module manufacturer, and the Chinese solar company, Suntech Power, which opened an assembly plant in a Phoenix suburb last year. Governor Brewer envisions a future where the state has a solar industry that "continues to lead with innovation and cost-effective technologies."
Arizona is one of a select group of western states that are participating in a cap-and-trade program through the Western Climate Initiative. Arizona, along with California, Utah, Montana, Oregon and Washington, hopes that the program leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the states.
