The Department of Veteran's Affairs has received a solar-powered carport at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and the project is one of the largest solar energy carports in the U.S.
SunWize Systems, an Arizona solar installer, finished the first phase of the project, which will be completed in 2012.
"SunWize has been a great partner to VA, taking phase one from concept to the operational carport system now providing clean solar energy to the hospital," said James Larson, energy manager at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, said in a statement. "We are proud to be a renewable energy leader in the health care community and look forward to working with SunWize on the completion of phase two."
The project is part of an initiative to make the VA more energy efficient, and the hospital will create enough electricity to run approximately 700 homes, SunWize Systems said. The hospital will also have a 9.3 million pound reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
