In Arizona, Governor Jan Brewer has publicly stated that she wants the state to be a national leader in solar panel installations and clean energy. In an effort to increase the amount of renewable energy generated in the state, solar nonprofit SmartPower is working with a utility to increase solar panel installations in the state.
SmartPower has teamed with Arizona Public Service, the state's largest utility company, to "make Arizona the solar capital of the United States," said Brian Keane, SmartPower's president. Through the Arizona Solar Challenge, SmartPower and APS first ask a community to pass a resolution committing them to install a certain number of residential photovoltaic systems over the next 12 months.
Once a community has agreed, the group provides a Solar Coach who guides homeowners through the installation process and provides helpful tips to ensure the process is as smooth as possible. Later, when communities realize their solar installation goals, they are designated as an "Arizona Solar Community," giving them media attention and a ongoing support for their community from both SmartPower and APS.
Keane affirmed that on Tuesday the initiative "witnessed the passage of the first community participation resolution, in Sun City West."
