When you think of pizza, one of the last things that probably comes to mind is solar power. In Arizona, a pizza shop recently had a solar panel system installed on its grounds, providing 100 percent of the store's electricity needs and slashing its greenhouse gas emissions.
Tony Vaccaro grew up in Long Island, New York, and was always fascinated by the photovoltaic array that was installed on a friend's house. When Vaccaro moved to Tucson, Arizona and started his own business, he knew that a solar panel system was something that he hoped to one day install - he just didn't realize how quickly he would realize that goal.
Vaccaro recently installed a photovoltaic system that doubles as a parking lot shade at his adjoining Brooklyn Pizza and Sky Bar business in the city, the Arizona Daily Star reports. Government incentives covered 80 percent of the initial costs and the store's electricity usage has already plummeted, Vaccaro asserts.
"Fossil fuels are clearly polluting and changing our environment in a negative way," Vaccaro said Tuesday. "It's an ethical issue - we need to take care of what we have." The solar panel system will pay for itself in three years based on current projections.
