Salt River Project Offers Arizona Schools Solar Deal

Not every building, house or location is ideal for solar. Some institutions, like public schools, also can't take advantage of lucrative solar installation tax credits, because they don't pay federal taxes.
Arizona's educational institutions shouldn't worry, though - the Salt River Project, an Arizona utility cooperative, has a plan to help those schools hook up solar power through special purchase plans, reports The Arizona Republic.
Rather than giving the schools solar panels, the SRP would sell them power from a planned Pinal County, Arizona solar installation, which is scheduled to go online in 2011.
"This is for schools that for whatever reason can't install it themselves (because of trees shading their roofs), or because they don't have the capital," Lori Singleton, SRP's sustainable-initiatives manager, told the Republic. "Some schools already said, 'Yes, we are definitely interested and would like to talk more.'"
Solar power purchase agreements, or PPAs, are becoming increasingly popular in major solar markets like Arizona and California, giving consumers the advantages of solar power while allowing utilities to leverage economies of scale.
Some agreements involve solar installations on-site, while others draw their renewable energy from larger power plants.
Each location and situation is different, but power-purchase agreements can be highly effective solutions for a wide variety of consumers.
