Something akin to California's gold rush or the 19th century's oil rush is afoot in America's Southwest - but this time, the key resource is the rays of the sun. The Yuma Sun profiled SouthWestern Technologies of Yuma, Arizona - a firm which began as a military contractor specializing in field testing services. As the recession hammered the firm's revenue, Ed Duppstadt and Jim Davis, the firm's founders, are refocusing their efforts and investing their own money into turning SouthWestern into a solar and renewable energy 'dynamo.'
'We figured it's time to give back to the community that's been good to us for 15 years,' Duppstadt told the Sun. 'We are fortunate to have a managing group that thinks ahead of the box, not just out of the box, and believes that planning is necessary. Our research and concentration has been on those elements that are best suited to the Yuma natural environment - solar, biofuel to include ethanol, biodiesel and methane, as well as geothermal.'
