Gila Bend, Arizona Gets Another Solar Facility
Friday, October 1st 2010 9:00 AM
By GetSolar Staff.
Tucson's solar economy continues to grow as Solon Corporation announced Thursday that it has signed a contract to design, build and operate an 18-megawatt solar power plant in Gila Bend, Arizona.

Gila Bend is already scheduled to host a major 280-megawatt solar installation from Spanish firm Abengoa Solar and a 150-megawatt solar farm from Phoenix-based Pacific Blue Energy Corp.

The region's attraction comes from Gila Bend's "Solar Overlay Zone" - a tract of land where permits for new solar installations are fast-tracked into three-month decision times. The length of permitting processes can be prohibitive for many developers, so a region with expedited permitting has obvious attractions for Arizona solar installers and developers.

The power provided by the plant will be purchased by the Arizona Public Service utility, which is striving to meet the state's goals for renewable-energy supplies.

"We are pleased to be teaming with Solon to bring our customers more solar power. This new solar plant is part of APS' company-wide mission of creating a sustainable energy future for Arizona," said Brad Albert, general manager of resource acquisitions and renewable resources with APS.
