A program devised by Arizona electric utility Tucson Electric Power could make it easier for area residents to participate in Tucson solar installations.
Under the Bright Tucson Community Solar Program, announced July 29, participants will be able to buy 150-kilowatt shares in a solar project at the University of Arizona's Science and Technology Park. Six of these "blocks," TEP says, "would cover the annual electric use of a typical household at a premium of just $18 per month." Each block costs $3 per month.
The price is guaranteed for 20 years, meaning that participants are effectively insulated from sudden increases in energy prices. With fossil-fuel-sourced energy expected to become more expensive as demand rises and supplies dwindle, locking in a low price for solar power may be a smart idea.
TEP's program could make it easier for Tucson residents - especially those concerned about the upfront cost of a solar installation - to adopt solar power. Arizona is already one of the best sites in the nation for solar projects, thanks to its abundant sunshine, and going solar may now be even more attractive for TEP customers.
