Solon Brings Cost-Effective Solar to Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona solar manufacturer Solon Corporation announced Tuesday that it has entered into an agreement with Tucson Electric Power to bring efficient, cost-effective solar power to its home city.
Construction on a 1.6-megawatt turnkey solar power installation at the University of Arizona's UATechPark will begin this December. The array will utilize a tracking system that maximizes efficiency by keeping the panels tilted at an optimum angle to the sun's rays.
TEP will own and operate the solar installation, while Solon will engineer and build it. Solon says that its standardized solar modules and single-axis tracking system keep the costs of building new solar facilities low and reduce construction time. Each cluster of solar panels also contains its own integrated power conversion station to make it easier to hook up to the grid.
"Tucson Electric Power is committed to developing innovative strategies to expand the use of solar power in our community," said Paul Bonavia, the chairman, president and chief executive officer of TEP and its parent company, UniSource Energy. "Solon's ability to quickly roll out an efficient, turnkey solar power plant will help reduce the time, cost and performance risks associated with some solar power projects."
