The Arizona Corporation Commission announced on Wednesday that it had approved Tucson Electric Power's plan to buy renewable energy from 10 new projects in the Tucson area.
Eight of those are solar energy facilities, proving once again that Arizona solar installations are taking hold. Indeed, a recent article on local news site KVOA.com quoted TEP as saying that there have been more solar projects installed this year than in the past eight years combined.
The eight solar facilities from which TEP will purchase power should produce 97 megawatts of energy, in total. A 2.2-megawatt landfill biogas generator and a 50-megawatt wind farm are also slated to be built.
"These new systems, combined with other projects already in the works, will give us access to clean, green energy from a wide variety of reasonably priced renewable generating resources," TEP vice president David Hutchens said.
TEP's announcement comes, however, as it rolls back its solar-energy rebates. The utility had offered homeowners $3 for each watt of solar power they installed - but it is dialing that back to $2 per watt.
