When it comes to solar power, there's more than one way to convert the sun's rays into usable energy. Conventional silicon photovoltaic panels, thin-film CIGS and cadmium-telluride modules, solar hot water systems, concentrating solar plants and Stirling engines all play an important role in this industry's innovation.
To help researchers, developers and solar installers figure out the best technologies, the Tuscon Power Electric Company will work with the University of Arizona to install six different solar power generation systems at the UA Tech Park in Tucson, reports KOLD News 13 in Arizona.
'We believe we'll be the largest multi-technology solar demonstration site in the United States. Hopefully that will allow Tucson and southern Arizona to become one of the leaders in solar energy development,' UA Tech park chief executive officer Bruce Wright told the news station.
The multi-technology solar installation lets researchers and private sector firms figure out which systems deliver the best return on investment and have the cheapest development and operating costs. It will also give University of Arizona graduates an opportunity to learn solar engineering first hand, and it will provide jobs to the local community.
The goal is to make Tucson the solar hub of the United States, in the same way that Detroit dominates auto manufacturing or Silicon Valley is the hub of personal computing and the web.
