The furniture and home products mega-retailer IKEA said today that it has plans to install eight separate solar arrays on its enormous retail locations and distribution centers in several locations around the Golden State.
In total, Ikea's initiative will construct new solar arrays with a total capacity of 4.5 megawatts. The installations will comprise almost 20,000 panels putting out 6.65 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy a year.
A Tejon, California solar array will be mounted on top of the Swedish company's massive distribution center. At 216,000 square feet, it will be one of the 10 largest roof-mounted commercial-scale solar installations in the entire United States.
"This approach is consistent with our commitment to sustainable building practices and we are thrilled that our evaluation determined these projects to be feasible for IKEA," said Mike Ward, IKEA United States president, in a statement.
IKEA worked with San Luis Obispo, California solar installer REC Solar, as well as Gloria Solar of Taiwan, to develop and build its installations.
