Sacramento solar installers could be busy in coming months, as the University of California Davis starts its new housing development. The school has joined with local business partners in a plan to create the largest zero net energy development in the country, according to PV Magazine.
The new project plans to add housing for 2,000 students and more than 300 families directly on the university's campus. The development will also include a village square, with spaces for retailers, and school facilities for both UC Davis and Los Rios Community College.
The key feature of the new project, however, is the proposal to provide all the development's electricity needs through large arrays of solar panels on roofs and parking canopies. The extensive solar installations are expected to provide 4 megawatts of power, hopefully reducing utility bills and eliminating a major factor in most communities' carbon footprints.
"West Village is a paradigm shift in creating both a great place to live and a model Zero Net Energy community," Nolan Zail, one of private backers behind the project, told PV Magazine.
California solar installations already provide more energy than anywhere else in the country, but solar power remains a relatively small part of the power industry, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That could change with growing use of smaller-scale developments.
