The California Public Utilities Commission approved Thursday a proposal by San Diego Gas and Electric to build or purchase 100 megawatts of photovoltaic solar energy, more than doubling the 80 megawatts the utility currently buys or generates.
SDG&E's proposed initiative would see the utility building 26 megawatts of new solar capacity and purchasing a further 74 megawatts from independent producers.
'Today's decision reflects the ongoing need for a flexible portfolio of solar resources and options that will help SDG&E derive one-third of its energy from renewable sources by 2020,' said James P. Avery, senior vice president at SDG&E. 'This program is beneficial because it further expands our solar power footprint within our service territory and brings that clean, renewable power closer to the areas of greatest demand.'
California currently requires electric utilities to generate 20 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2010; a law to set the goal for 2020 to 33 percent was recently defeated.
SDG&E plants to build California installations in the 1- to 2-megawatt range, which will most likely be located throughout the San Diego and southern Orange County area.
