The world's biggest chip maker, Intel, remains the top purchaser of renewable energy in the U.S., Reuters reports. The company nearly doubled the amount of green energy credits it will buy in 2011 to more than 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours, solidifying its position as one of the greenest U.S. companies.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently released its rankings of U.S.-based businesses that derive a majority of their electricity needs from clean energy sources, like solar, wind and other renewables; Intel placed first because of its commitment to green technology. Based in California, Intel not only bought enough clean energy credits to power more than 218,000 homes, but also installed nine solar panel systems at its facilities in the U.S. and Israel.
Intel derives roughly 88 percent of all of its electricity use from clean energy sources, the company said in a statement. Retail chain Kohl's came in second after the technology giant: Kohl's gets 100 percent of its electricity from green sources and buys up more than 1.4 million kilowatt-hours every year, according to the EPA.
