A Santa Clarita, California solar developer has created a "breakthrough technology" which improves the efficiency of photovoltaic solar modules by cooling them without the use of petroleum products.
The BioBacksheet functions by absorbing and dissipating heat, with a thermal conductivity 70 percent higher than conventional, oil-based plastic backsheets. Heat dissipation is a critical component of effective solar systems, because with increasing temperatures, solar photovoltaic installations decrease in efficiency.
"We were pleasantly surprised by this finding. We designed the BioBacksheet with the goal of being green, lower cost and higher durability. But now, BioBacksheet has a much more valuable feature - improved power output," said BioSolar chief executive officer BioSolar.
The BioBacksheet was thoroughly tested last month by ThermTest, an independent authority in thermal testing.
After meeting with international and California-based solar installers, developers and contractors at InterSolar 2010 in San Francisco, BioSolar confirmed that there was widespread interest in this important auxiliary technology for solar installations.
The good news also delivered a jolt to BioSolar shares (OTC Bulletin Board: BSRC), which gained 12.65 percent to trade at 19 cents.
If BioSolar can bring its innovation to market with reasonable costs, it could deliver a much-needed boost to the efficiency of conventional solar photovoltaic modules in California and abroad, all while freeing the industry a bit more from the necessity of employing petroleum-based components.
