The Blythe Solar Power Project, which is planned to be the largest solar farm ever created, is to receive $2.1 billion in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The amount is the largest offered to a solar installation by the government in history. The Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office approved the amount.
Blythe will have a power-generating capacity of 484 megawatts, and should create approximately 1,000 jobs. The impact on the environment will be sizable as well, as 710,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be canceled out each year. This amount of carbon emissions is equivalent to about 123,000 cars.
"The Department's loan guarantees play a critical role in facilitating the large-scale deployment of innovative clean energy technologies," Steven Chu, the U.S. Secretary of Energy said on his blog. "Including loans for advanced vehicle technologies, the Department has committed financing to support 27 clean energy projects that will create or save more than 60,000 jobs across the United States."
Chu believes the California solar installation will help the United States win the global clean energy race.
