A handful of California companies will be among those receiving federal funds to develop new technologies that will allow facilities that generate concentrated solar power to be more effective than ever.
The Department of Energy plans to distribute $62 million over the next five years to companies in various states that are working on various aspects of this technology. Instead of using standard photovoltaic panels to generate electricity from the sun, concentrated solar uses mirrors to focus solar energy to a large container that becomes superheated and powers turbines.
Researchers are working to make this technology produce energy for more hours of the day as opposed to just when the sun is shining. With that in mind, one goal of this DOE program is to ultimately develop technologies allowing power to be produced for up to 18 hours a day.
Some of the California companies to benefit from the program include eSolar and Pratt & Whitney. Both companies are set to receive around $10 million working on improvements to concentrated solar technology.
Other California companies that were expected to receive funds are General Atomics, SENER Engineering and Systems, and SunTrough Energy.
