California Company Creates Most Efficient Solar Film Ever
Friday, June 11th 2010 6:52 PM
By GetSolar Staff.
MiaSole, a California-based solar panel manufacturer, announced today that the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has tested and confirmed that the firm's thin-film solar modules are the most efficient of their kind, at 13.8 percent energy conversion efficiency.

Some universities and foreign companies have claimed efficiencies as high as 20 percent for the technology, but they have not been independently verified.

The MiaSole modules use copper indium gallium selenide to create extremely thin panels for industrial and utility deployment.

MiaSole is on track to sell 6.5 megawatts of solar capacity in the first half this year and projects that that figure will more than triple to 22 megawatts by the end of the year.

"We are pleased with our strong continued progress," said Dr. Joseph Laia, CEO of MiaSole. "The modules that we ship in 2011 will have efficiencies greater than 13 percent."

Most California solar panel installers and buyers use traditional crystalline silicon panels, which achieve higher efficiencies but are more expensive and resource-intensive to produce. Therefore, continuing innovation by firms like MiaSole could be good news for businesses switching to solar power in California.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19832819-ADNFCR
