California Company Develops Solar Panel Backsheet from Castor Beans

BioSolar, Inc., a company based in Santa Clarita, California, announced this week that it is commencing sales of a new eco-friendly backsheet for solar panels.
The panel backsheets are made from a castor-bean resin, which is compounded with another petroleum-free product in the extrusion process. The bio-based backsheet does not use any oil products in its manufacture - and it manages to be more durable than conventional backsheets, BioSolar chief technology officer Stanley B. Levy says.
BioBacksheet, he noted, "is more reliable than backsheets on the market today, and we have received rave reviews from photovoltaic manufacturers."
The castor-bean resin-based backsheet is more cost-effective than traditional backsheet technology, too - another reason that it may become popular among solar panel manufacturers.
Company CEO David Lee said that early signs were positive. He reported that major solar panel companies "have requested large quantities [of the BioBacksheet] for full scale integration trials into their solar panel production lines."
As companies look to green their supply chains - something corporations from Wal-Mart Stores to Nike are looking to do - the origin of raw materials will come into focus. And BioSolar will be able to provide a greener alternative to conventional solar panel backsheets - good news for the company and the environment.
