California Elementary School Goes Back to Class with Solar Power

For students at Grant Elementary School in Redding, California, back-to-school season this year brings a new lesson: one that teaches the importance of renewable energy. Through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Mill Valley, California firm Solar Power Partners, Grant Elementary is buying energy from a 202.5-kilowatt solar array.

Elk Grove, California solar installer Spectrum Energy Development designed and built the array under a contract with Solar Power Partners. The arrangement allows the energy firm to take on the fixed cost of building an array, while the school will immediately begin saving with a stable, predictable energy bill.

"As with any public school, we're under pressure to ensure we make wise choices about expenditure that also benefit the community and provide educational value to students," said Grant Elementary superintendent John Krinkel.

Over the term of the 20-year agreement, the school should save $600,000, in addition to preventing carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to burning over 23,500 gallons of gas.

The new solar development, says Solar Power Partners chief executive officer Bob Powell, will "demonstrate to the community that using alternative energy can be cost-effective, efficient and attainable."ADNFCR-3324-ID-19928338-ADNFCR
