A high-tech firm in San Jose, California is turning to solar panels to provide electricity for its headquarters, helping gain LEED Gold certification for the main campus. One of the largest San Jose solar installations, the 550-kilowatt array at Brocade's headquarters uses cells from SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA, SPWRB).
'As we designed our 'green' facility, we realized that integrating solar as a clean, silent form of energy made both economic and environmental sense. The investment will produce more than 18 million kilowatt-hours over 25 years and offers a direct hedge against the rising cost of electricity,' said Brocade's chief executive officer Mike Klayko.
The firm provides both hardware and software networking solutions, from servers to switching backbones to data centers. Information technology providers use a great deal of energy powering their computer equipment, and solar power can provide that electricity at a lower cost and with less environmental impact.
Intel, Sun Microsystems and Mirosoft have all tested solar panels at their data center facilities in the U.S.
Brocade did not reveal the cost of its new solar installation.
