California Racetrack Unveils Solar Plans

Infineon Raceway, a storied auto racetrack in Sonoma, California, is going green with solar energy.

The track is partnering with Japanese electronics giant Panasonic Corp. to install 350 kilowatts of solar power. In total,1,652 panels will be put in place around the track; Infineon Raceway expects the arrays to produce 41 percent of its power needs.

Also on tap for the facility is a display board that uses light-emitting diode technology. Slated for construction along California's Highway 37, the new board will use significantly less energy than the one it replaces.

While auto racing isn't necessarily the greenest of activities, Infineon Raceway is helping make the sport more environmentally friendly. The track already has a number of water conservation initiatives in place - and it hosted the nation's first-ever electric motorcycle race earlier this year.

Infineon Raceway's status as one of the preeminent road-racing venues in the country will help it show auto enthusiasts the benefits of going green, track president Steve Page said.

"This solar alliance with Panasonic marks a significant new step in our efforts to operate this business in a sustainable fashion," he noted. "Our visibility in the performance automotive industry gives us a terrific platform to carry the message to a broader audience of racing enthusiasts."
