Solar energy is becoming increasingly widespread in California, with photovoltaic panels being used to power everything from homes to businesses to public buildings.
Increasingly efficient technologies mean that photovoltaic panels are paying for themselves more quickly than ever. Earlier models took as long as 25 years to pay for themselves, but new products have brought that figure closer to 10 years.
With this in mind, Solar Power, Inc. reported this week that it has been contracted by BLT Enterprises to design and build a 397 kilowatt photovoltaic system that will provide electricity for a recycling and transfer station located in Fremont.
The facility in question processed 14,000 tons of material in 2009, including enough paper to save 182,000 trees, notes the announcement.
"Not only will BLT Enterprises save millions of dollars on energy costs over the next 25 years, but the company will also be able to deliver its leading-edge recycling and waste management solutions with a significantly reduced carbon footprint," said Dion Camp-Sanders, CEO of Pacific Edison.
The system will include 1,776 solar panels mounted on rooftop areas as well as parking shade structures. The solar energy generated is expected to result in $128,000 in savings during the first year of operation alone.
