Rainbow Sandals is unveiling its San Clemente, California solar installation next week - and the company can't wait to start using solar power.
Rainbow expects that its new solar array will produce 90 percent of the power needed by its headquarters building. The sandal manufacturer anticipates saving $50,000 per year on its energy bills - and it says the money it is paying out-of-pocket for its solar installation will be recouped within five years.
The sandal company relied on a number of subsidies. It's getting a 30 percent federal tax credit for its array, and its utility, San Diego Gas & Electric, is providing a production-based incentive. SDG&E, like utilities across California, offers rebate programs to both homeowners and businesses.
Matthew McCullough, the CEO of the installation firm with which Rainbow contracted, noted that going solar provides myriad benefits for companies. "Rainbow provides a great example for businesses that want to make a change in how they impact the environment," he said. "Not only was this smart for reducing their carbon footprint, it was also smart for their pocket book!"
