California School District Going Solar

A California school district has decided to make an investment in clean energy, contracting with one of the state's prominent solar energy companies to do so.

According to SunPower Corp., the San Ramon Valley Unified School District will install solar panels on six schools in the district. The panels will generate more than 3 megawatts of electricity, and they will be paid for with low interest Qualified School Construction Bonds provided by the federal stimulus bill.

"We are confident that we are getting the most value over the minimum expected 25-year lifetime of these systems. We truly believe that we can maximize savings through these systems, while at the same time modeling thoughtful stewardship of our environment for our students and the community by producing clean, renewable solar power at our schools," said school district superintendent Steve Enoch.

The schools are expected to save a combined $2 million on their energy bills during the first year of the panels' operation.

The panels will also offset about 80 percent of the electricity costs for each school. SunPower indicated that it will be using solar carport tracking systems at the school, which provide shade while generating power. The systems also follow the sun throughout the day, adding to their overall efficiency.
