Solar energy has applications beyond just homes and businesses, as a recent solar boat contest in Southern California illustrates.
The annual competition, called the Solar Cup, was organized by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and pitted more than 700 high school students from 36 campuses against each other in a test of engineering acumen and creativity. Participants had to design and build a single-person boat powered by solar energy.
The cup took place over the weekend. On Saturday, the Riverside Press-Enterprise says, contestants ran a 1-mile endurance race; on Sunday, the challenge was a 200-meter sprint.
Competition entrants were judged on their boats' race results, of course - but technical reports accompanying the boat designs and water-conservation analyses were also a part of the scoring process.
This year's Solar Cup, the eighth such event, aimed to teach students about the value of solar power and the importance of resource management, the Southwest Riverside News Network quoted MWD general manager Jeffrey Kightlinger as saying. The program, he noted, is "an excellent opportunity for Metropolitan and its member water agencies to teach tomorrow's leaders about renewable resources, the continuing need for a sound water conservation ethic and environmental stewardship."
