Solar power systems are springing up the world over - and a panel company based in San Jose, California announced that it is helping build three arrays in Italy.
SunPower Corp. may be better known as a solar-panel supplier in California solar installations. But it said Thursday that it is providing panels to Solar Ventures, S.r.l., a solar project developer with operations around the Mediterranean. In total, 11.1 megawatts of solar energy will be installed in the Piedmont region, located in far northwestern Italy.
SunPower Europe, Middle East and Africa sales director Mario Riello said the three projects will "deliver reliable, emission-free solar power to the community and continue the rapid expansion of the Italian solar market.
Italy has one of Europe's most robust solar power markets. While it's not as large a solar consumer as Germany, it's better suited to solar installations: It enjoys more sunny days and has stronger sunshine. And because the country is cutting solar feed-in tariffs - the payments that utilities must make to solar energy producers - next year, there may be a rush to install new solar arrays in the coming months.
