CSUB began construction of a new 1-megawatt photovoltaic solar array that will simultaneously provide the university with power and shade 500 parking spaces on campus.
The SunEdison utility is funding the project, which is projected to cost $9.5 million and provide between a quarter and a third of the total power usage of the university.
"We get 20 years of energy at a slightly lower rate and from a sustainable source," said Pat Jacobs, Assistant Vice-President for Facilities Planning Development and Operations. "We're doing something green for the environment, it helps the bottom line of the university, and I think people will enjoy having covered parking."
CSUB committed to reducing its carbon footprint when the University President Horace Mitchell signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007. The university says that energy from the solar array will end up costing about 5 percent less than that from CSUB's previous utility, Pacific Gas & Electric.
Plans call for the solar panel installation to be completed by the end of summer 2010.
