California Utility Announces Solar Demonstration Projects
Thursday, June 3rd 2010 11:51 PM

One of California's leading utility companies has announced some new demonstration projects that will help usher in the next generation of solar energy technology.

An announcement from San Diego Gas & Electric focuses on the two new demonstration projects that will be used at the utility's operations center in El Cajon, California.

"The concentrated solar technology we are hosting on our property is more than a bright idea conceived in the lab, it represents the potential leading edge of new and practical forms of renewable power," said James P. Avery, senior vice president of power supply for SDG&E.

One technology being demonstrated is a 15-foot PowerDish from Infinia, a Washington company. This is a mirrored dish that concentrates sunlight onto a Stirling engine that can produce enough electricity to power a typical home.

The second technology is a concentrator photovoltaic system built by California company SolFocus. This system concentrates sunlight as much as 650 times onto high efficiency solar cells. This particular demonstration project will be able to generate 8,400 watts of electricity, which is sufficient to power three homes.
