California Utility Celebrates First Solar Station of New Program

Last week, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) celebrated the first step of a joint initiative to install 500 megawatts of new solar capacity in California over the next five years. The utility joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and local officials and residents at the initiation of the Vaca-Dixon Solar Station near Vacaville, California.

The 2-megawatt station is just one of dozens that are planned under the utility's pilot project, which calls for PG&E and a group of local partners to develop 250 megawatts of new capacity each.

The plan calls for small solar installations of less than 20 megawatts, which typically require less time and capital for funding and development. Larger solar installations often face much longer regulatory delays and more complications.

"I applaud PG&E on the completion of its Vaca-Dixon Solar Station and look forward to seeing many similar projects to come," said CPUC President Michael R. Peevey. "These types of smaller-scale projects help the state meet its clean energy goals in much less time than projects that are larger in size."

The Vaca-Dixon Solar Station took four months to complete and covers sixteen acres. Solon Corporation, a subsidiary of German firm Solon SE, was the primary contractor. ADNFCR-3324-ID-19862246-ADNFCR
