While politicians in the U.S. continue to debate border control and immigration, green energy entrepreneurs in California are developing solar installations to provide power to groups working to tackle the issues raised along that border.
SolFocus, a Mountain View, California solar developer, said today that it has completed a 16.8-kilowatt concentrating solar photovoltaic system in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
The installation will provide power to the Border Environment Cooperation Commission, a non-profit group that works with local communities to finance, develop and build projects in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The projects are designed to address the needs of both local residents and the border's ecosystems and environment.
The project will provide about a third of the office's annual power consumption.
"Bringing together SolFocus and local developer Sonnergía demonstrates the importance of bilateral cooperation between the United States and Mexico on environmental and economic policies and potential business developments in clean energy technologies for this region's sustainable economic growth," said BECC general manager Daniel Chacón.
The concentrating solar installation at BECC's headquarters uses reflective optics to concentrate the sun's rays onto small, high-efficiency solar panels, thus allowing the array to use less space, silicon and water in its manufacturing and operation.
