Contested Ivanpah Valley Solar Project Wins CEC Approval

Yet another major California solar installation won approval from the California Energy Commission this week - in this case, the 370-megawatt Ivanpah Valley concentrating solar power plant in San Bernardino County.

The approval was somewhat more controversial and contested than previous applications, reports the Sacramento Press-Enterprise, because it will be built on environmentally sensitive land and will occupy some of the endangered desert tortoise's habitat.

The Ivanpah plant is one of nine major concentrating solar power plants that the CEC has been considering in recent weeks - in total, 11 gigawatts of clean energy will likely be approved.

Other projects include NextEra Energy's Riverside County solar installation, the 250-megawatt Abengoa Mojave solar installation and the 1,000-megawatt Blythe Solar Power Project - the largest concentrating solar power plant in the world.

"It is critical for us to reduce our fossil fuel dependence," commissioner Robert B. Weisenmiller said, according to the Press-Enterprise. He also emphasized the economic benefits of the project. "When you look at San Bernardino, unemployment there is at least 15 percent, and that's ignoring people who've stopped looking for jobs."
