Southern California Edison (SCE) has announced another step forward in its plan to deploy photovoltaic arrays on rooftops around San Bernardino and eastern Los Angeles County by mid-2011.

According to the utility, it has reached a master supply agreement to use rooftop solar mounting solutions from SunLink, with up to 50 megawatts worth of photovoltaic panels set to be installed. In total, SCE plans to build 250 megawatts of owner-installed and operated photovoltaic systems over the next five years.

"We are pleased to have the support of SunLink's experienced engineering team and quality products as we install the next 50 MW of one of the nation's largest solar PV programs," said SCE Director of Generation Strategy and Planning Mark Nelson.

Sunlink products allow photovoltaic panels to tilt, allowing them to move more with the sun and operate more efficiently. According to the company, its products are used on more than 540 sites across North America.

Along with generating electricity, SCE said that its engineers will study the electrical effects of large photovoltaic installations on distribution circuits. The project is also expected to generate as many as 800 green jobs in Southern California.
