The city of Hollister, California will begin work today on a large-scale solar energy development program that will provide solar power to the Hollister Wastewater Treatment Plant and eight Hollister public schools, as well as the offices of the entire Hollister School District.
A groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the town's water reclamation facility on Wednesday at 10 a.m. PDT.
"Our solar energy initiative will create jobs for local residents, reduce energy costs in our county and put Hollister on a path toward a stronger, healthier and more prosperous future," said Victor Gomez, mayor of Hollister. "These alternative energy programs are good for the city of Hollister, good for the rate payers, good for the schoolchildren and good for our local economy."
When complete, the entire project will comprise a 1.16-megawatt solar installation at the new wastewater treatment plant and nine additional solar arrays at Hollister schools, which will provide 1.45 megawatts of clean energy.
In total, the town will install 11,000 new solar panels. It's working with three California solar installers and contractors: Perpetual Energy Systems, Clearspot Energy and Rosendin Electric of San Jose.
