Bill McKibben, the founder of the Berkeley-based international climate change action group 350.org, launched a new program last week. Now, he's hoping that "Put Solar On It" will pressure world leaders to install solar panels on their state residences - like the White House - by October 10 of this year.
So far, McKibben has seven leaders in his sights - the presidents or prime ministers of Australia, China, India, the Maldives, Mexico, the United States and the United Kingdom. If the Maldives - an island nation in the Indian Ocean heavily threatened by rising seas - seems a bit out of place there, that's because it's the only nation so far to follow through on the 10/10/10 commitment.
The world leader initiative is just part of the Put Solar On It movement. It also includes "work parties" to help build green power sources like solar installations in local communities, and it's partnering with a global campaign called 10:10, which aims to reduce carbon footprints by 10 percent in 2010.
More information is available at the website, putsolaron.it, and users can also nominate their own heads of state for the solar panel commitment.
