Innovalight Inc. of Sunnyvale, California announced Monday that the firm will develop and produce solar cells with the Chinese solar manufacturing giant JA Solar Holdings. The California startup specializes in producing silicon nanocrystal inks, which are then applied to the surface of solar wafers to produce high-efficiency cells.
JA Solar says that it has already achieved 18.9 percent electricity conversion efficiency in its "SECIUM" solar cells with Innovalight's solar inks, and the partners are aiming to improve that figure to 20 percent efficiency or better.
One of the great advantages of Innovalight's technology is that it boosts efficiency without requiring a complex retooling of production lines and processes. Instead, a simple installation can apply the inks to existing solar cells, reducing costs and making the technology more easily available.
According to Innovalight and JA Solar, research and development will be conducted in both China and California.
"JA Solar is a world leader in solar cell production and a pioneer in advancing solar technology," said Innovalight CEO Conrad Burke. "I am delighted with this long-term commercial agreement as well as our plans to jointly develop new products."
