The largest solar thermal system in California has been created on a rooftop at Santa Clara University, in partnership with Chromasun, a California solar installation company that specializes in rooftop solar panels.
The setup will produce more than 6,700 therms of energy each year, as well as having the ability to heat water to 200 degrees Fahrenheit for the university's dining hall.
"Rooftop high-temperature solar thermal systems harvest more usable solar energy than is possible with conventional PV or thermal technologies," Peter Le Lievre, chief executive officer and founder of Chromasun told the news source. "This means larger reductions in building energy consumption and a significant savings in utility bills."
The project will reduce bills for water-heating by approximately 70 percent. The emissions reductions are also quite substantial, with 34 tons of carbon dioxide cut, which Chromasun says is equivalent to more than what six cars produce every year. The company estimates that Santa Clara University will be climate neutral by the end of 2015.
The thermal system has an estimated 25-year lifespan.
