Lottery Entrepreneur Proposes 100 Percent Solar Power in California

In action movies, we commonly see the protagonist get himself out of a tight scrape because his plan is "just crazy enough to work." It's less often that someone tries that in real life - but that appears to be Boudewijn Poelmann's modest proposal to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger - who should know something about crazy enough to work, himself.

In a column published on Reuters and Greener World Media, the entrepreneur and founder of United Postcode Lotteries proposed a billion-dollar lottery operation to build solar plants in California.

"Suppose the Lottery's yearly revenue ... in California will soon be $1 billion a year. Forty percent is for prizes and 40 percent is for good causes - in this case, for building solar plants in California."

The Postcode Lottery effectively uses the lottery system to raise money, but uses the revenue for a variety of charitable and environmental causes.

Poelmann's idea is a bit out of the ordinary: Proposing to make California 100 percent solar-powered is a little far-fetched for a state that currently faces a referendum to remove a requirement that the state get a third of its power from renewable sources by 2020.

But in the long run, it's not really a crazier idea than relying on imported fossil fuels to run California's electric grid.
