The California Energy Commission approved Wednesday the construction of nearly 1,000 megawatts of new solar capacity spread out across two plants in Southern California.
In the past five weeks, the commission has approved six new solar power plants, with a total capacity of 2,829 megawatts.
"These approved solar projects continue to demonstrate the importance of harnessing the power of the sun for clean, renewable energy for California's communities," said chairman Karen Douglas. "Today's actions show how California is leading the nation by licensing nearly 3,000 megawatts this year with large-scale solar power plants."
Both the the 250-megawatt Genesis project and the 709-megawatt Imperial Valley installation were approved by unanimous votes. Since both received approval before the end of this year, they will be eligible for federal funding through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (ARRA).
The Genesis project is being developed by Genesis Solar, which is owned by NextEra Energy Resources, while the Imperial Valley Solar Project is being built by a subsidiary of Tessera Solar.
Both are solar thermal projects rather than more familiar solar photovoltaic plants - the Genesis project employs parabolic troughs and steam turbines, while the Imperial Valley solar installation will use SunCatchers and Stirling engines.
