Williams Selyem, a famed producer of California Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, announced this week the opening of its new Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard, which features a number of important 'green' technologies and innovations. Chief among these are the solar panels on the roof of the parking and mechanical facilities, which provide much of the winery's power and hot water needs.
'Every element of the production facility including floor coverings, ceilings and water treatment systems is of the highest scientific standard in the state. It is tailor made for our unfiltered, non-interventionist wines,' said executive winemaker Bob Cabral.
The vineyard uses both solar panels, which provide around a third of the facility's electricity needs, and a solar hot water system. A green roof covered in native grasses, re-purposed wood for construction, the preservation of shading trees and other marks of dedication to a sustainable construction ethos characterize the building.
Williams Selyem enjoys an elite reputation among California vintners, and most of its wines are sold directly to a mailing list of consumers, although a few do reach restaurants around the country.
