Sharp Electronics Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Japan's Sharp Corporation, announced today that its Memphis factory has manufactured 2 million solar photovoltaic panels since 2003. Sharp is a major presence in the U.S. solar market, supplying the modules for the FedEx hub in Oakland, California and Google's main campus in Mountain View, California.
According to the company's press release, the 2 million panels manufactured in Memphis would produce enough electricity to power 65,000 homes and save nearly 12 million metric tons of CO2 per year.
"We share this achievement with our customers," said Sharp Energy Solutions Group vice president Ron Kenedi. "Our customers are creating jobs by hiring electricians, roofers and other labor to install our high-quality solar panels, thus driving local economies while helping to build the nation's renewable energy portfolio."
Sharp's U.S. headquarters are based in Huntington Beach, California, while its global headquarters are located in Osaka, Japan. The company began manufacturing solar modules in 1963, consistently pioneering solar power efficiency and deploying its modules in space and at sea.
Because its most of its modules are manufactured in Memphis, Sharp's solar photovoltaic panels have often been used in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act projects to comply with the act's "Buy American" clause.
