Solar power is now the fastest-growing energy industry in America, writes Rhone Resch, the president and chief executive officer of the Solar Energy Industries Association.
As Resch points out, solar jobs now employ almost 100,000 Americans, and many firms are aggressively recruiting and expanding. The goal of the SEIA is to install enough new solar capacity to power 2 million homes every single year from 2015 onwards - an ambitious target of 10,000 megawatts.
The industry added 441 megawatts of new solar capacity in 2009, and it's on track to put in over a gigawatt by the end of 2010.
"[The SEIA] report just confirms what we already know: that solar energy is gaining traction in the United States," said Evolution Solar Co. President and CEO Robert Hines. "Now that U.S. public policy has become stable and friendly towards solar, more and more people are taking a serious look at this revolutionary technology."
Resch also brought up his concerns about the fossil fuel industry's attempts to fight back against solar and wind energy by sponsoring initiatives like Proposition 23, which threatens to undercut California's efforts to create a sustainable energy economy.
