San Jose, California-based Solexant will build a first-of-its-kind thin-film solar manufacturing plant in Gresham, Oregon. The plant uses special nanocrystal inks to "print" solar cells, allowing for the low-cost manufacturing of solar modules.
The company is receiving a $25 million loan from the state's Oregon Energy Program, and it's also getting an $18.75 million tax credit from the federal government for building a clean energy manufacturing facility.
"As Oregon's first thin-film solar manufacturing plant, the Gresham facility will prove the commercial application of our nanocrystal ultrathin-film solar cell technology in a very capital-efficient way and solidify Solexant's place as a leader in the solar industry," said Solexant CEO Damoder Reddy.
Founded four years ago, Solexant uses technology developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. When it completes construction of the factory, it will be the first thin-film solar site of its type in the world.
Solexant expects production to begin next year.
Thin-film solar modules are becoming increasingly popular: its light weight, low cost and relative ease of installation has helped Arizona-based First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) become the biggest solar panel producer in the nation by total capacity built. Though they are less efficient than conventional silicon panels, thin-film modules are continually being improved.
