Southern California Edison is moving ahead with its Solar Photovoltaic Program - an initiative designed to install solar panels on the unused commercial roof space in SCE's service territory.
Around the world, millions of square feet of commercial property roof space are going essentially unused. Under the SPVP project, SCE will develop, install and operate 250 megawatts of solar power on commercial buildings' roofs and privately owned open spaces. Already, 75 megawatts of the total are in the development stage.
SCE notes that, unlike solar projects located far from civilization, the solar arrays installed under SPVP will use the utility's existing distribution network. The cost of delivering solar power will likely be lowered as a result, a move that would benefit California electric customers.
"These installations will be the blueprint for utilities and large-scale solar plant owners and operators, demonstrating rapid, cost effective and reliable integration of grid-interconnected distributed solar power generation," Satcon CEO Steve Rhoades said. Satcon is supplying inverters for SPVP.
Distributed solar projects like SPVP are likely to become more common as utilities look to buy renewable energy - in California and elsewhere.
