The Solar Electric Power Association has released its 2009 Utility Solar Rankings, finding that Southern California Edison is the top company in "Cumulative Solar Megawatts," a measure of how much power the utility draws from solar sources.

Southern California Edison came in at the top with 515.6 megawatts, while PG&E was the second most-solar company with 314.6 megawatts. The two California utilities exceeded the total solar capacity of every other company combined, reflecting the dominance of the state in U.S. solar markets.

Southern California Edison also sent the most solar power to each of its customers, at a rate of 106 watts of solar capacity per customer.

PG&E exceeded Southern California Edison in one key measure, however - SEPA's measure of "Annual Solar Megawatts," or how much new solar capacity came online in 2009. In this case, PG&E was slightly ahead of its competitor at 85.2 megawatts versus 74.2 megawatts. According to SEPA, almost all of the new solar panels installed relied on photovoltaic technology.

SEPA also said that a large part of the growth in installed solar capacity came from the consumer side, as homeowners and businesses installed solar panels and hooked them up to the grid, selling the extra power back to the utilities through net metering. ADNFCR-3324-ID-19847591-ADNFCR
