SunPower Achieves World Record Solar Cell Efficiency

SunPower Corp. of San Jose, California, announced on Wednesday that it had achieved a world record electricity conversion efficiency for silicon solar photovoltaic cells. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab confirmed that SunPower now has the world record, with 24.2 percent efficiency for a full-scale solar cell manufactured at its Philippines plant.
SunPower is one of the oldest and best-known solar panel manufacturers in the country, founded in 1985. It's also one of a handful of publicly traded solar enterprises, trading under the Nasdaq ticker symbols SPWRA and SPWRB.
The company's record-breaking cell is a landmark for solar panel efficiency, marking the steady progress that solar power has made towards becoming increasingly cheap and economical.
"As we celebrate SunPower's 25th anniversary this year, I am thrilled to see the company achieve technology milestones that were inconceivable only a few years ago. SunPower's research and development and engineering teams have increased cell efficiency by a full four percentage points over the last five years while radically driving down manufacturing costs," said Dr. Richard Swanson, the chief technology officer and founder of SunPower.
SunPower's boundary-pushing solar cells will help drive down costs and make solar panel installations an increasingly practical option for consumers and utilities alike.
