SunPower Solar Tech Selected for U.S. Federal Facilities

SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWRA, SPWRB), a San Jose, California solar developer and manufacturer, announced Monday that it is providing over 20 megawatts of solar panel capacity at federal government installations in Colorado, Indiana, Arizona and other states.

"SunPower has the experience and credibility to successfully navigate the federal procurement process and deliver reliable, high performance solar systems that meet agency requirements. With the addition of a U.S.-based panel manufacturing facility this year, we have also bolstered our ability to serve this growing demand," said Karen Butterfield, the company's director of federal accounts.

Among the government facilities being powered by SunPower modules are: the Department of Energy's new Research Support Facility in Golden, Colorado; the General Emmett Bean Federal Building in Indianapolis, Indiana; and the Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Colorado.

Many of these projects were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, more commonly known as the stimulus package. This reflects the continued importance of public-sector support for the development of the domestic solar industry.

Although private-sector adoption is growing, solar power needs support from local, state and federal governments so that it can continue to expand and take on a greater portion of the country's energy needs.
