Tofu Maker Installs Solar Panels at Garden Grove HQ

Tofu is pretty well associated with eco-friendly, environmentally conscious types. It may have been with that in mind that House Foods America, which bills itself as the highest-quality non-genetically-modified tofu maker, decided to build a Garden Grove, California solar installation for its headquarters.

Of course, the $1.15 million savings created by a green, renewable energy system probably helped as well - increasingly, solar power is seen as both an environmentally and financially responsible solution.

"Turning to solar power is pivotal to meeting our company's environmental goals and delivering long-term customer value," said Shigeru Natake, president of House Foods America. "Reducing energy consumption is part of our overall commitment to sustainability."

The array will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 527,861 pounds per year, said the tofu maker - the equivalent of planting more than 6,100 trees.

Tofu is itself an ecologically sound food - according to the company, each pound of beef needs seven pounds of plant protein in feed or grazing. Tofu, made from soybeans, is a much more efficient conversion of vegetable matter to edible protein.

To help promote the new array, House Feeds teamed up with Master Chef Noryuki Sugie to produce a three-course tofu feast, featuring tofu ceviche, tofu burgers and even tofu french toast, at the opening ceremony.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19928939-ADNFCR
