World's Largest Semiconductor Foundry Puts $50 Million Into California Solar Firm

By GetSolar Staff.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the globe's largest independent semiconductor foundry, announced today that it will invest $50 million into the California-based solar manufacturer Stion.

Stion is a leading maker of cutting-edge thin-film solar panels, which are increasing in popularity because of the relatively low cost and simple manufacturing process for thin-films.

Stion will license and transfer its thin-film CIGSS technology to the Taiwanese chip maker, and TSMC will export solar modules back to Stion. The two companies will collaborate on developing and improving the technology.

"Working with Stion, TSMC gains a robust thin film technology with inherent low cost structure. With TSMC's R&D capabilities and manufacturing expertise, we believe we can achieve long-term overall leadership in solar PV solutions, and we are happy to be able to contribute to a greener economy," said TSMC President of New Businesses Rick Tsai.

The $50 million investment, which represents a 21 percent stake in Stion, will take place through VentureTech Alliance, a venture capital subsidiary of TSMC. In many ways, the deal represents the new face of solar R&D - Stion was founded in 2006 with venture capital backing, and is now expanding its reach through international ventures.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19844870-ADNFCR
